McClelland Barclay was an American illustrator. By the age of 21, Barclay's work had been published in The Saturday Evening Post, Ladies' Home Journal, and Cosmopolitan. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve in 1938 and following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor he went on active duty

McClelland Barclay (1891-1943),
Passion is the first word that comes to mind when talking about McClelland Barclay (1891-1943). He was passionate about his art, the sea, sports, women, and his patriotic duty. “The Golden Age of American Illustration” was a time when all the great magazines of the day used artists to paint their interior stories and advertisements. One such artist was Barclay. From the 1920s almost until his death, his illustrations were everywhere. His Fisher Body Girl ads, his pretty girls on the covers of magazines such as Pictorial Review, Redbook, and the Saturday Evening Post, and his artwork for the serial stories that appeared in Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping all made him a household name.

But McClelland Barclay was much more than a painter of beautiful women. He was a fine artist, naval artist, sculptor, and designer of women’s fashions, jewelry, and metal arts. New research has led to important discoveries about his professional and personal life. Here are wonderful pictures of his models, one of whom was an actress of some renown who also became his wife. And photos of him at work and more.
